With the availability of portable, low-cost laser technology, optical methods have become important diagnostic tools for biomedical in-vivo applications. Methods such as time- and frequency-domain near-infrared spectroscopy, optical coherence tomography, photoacoustic and speckle imaging allow, in many cases, to obtain non-invasive images of subsurface tissue structures with weak radiation-tissue interaction. This makes optical techniques particularly attractive for in-vivo imaging of human brain function. This workshop aims (i) at a focussed discussion of recent advances in optical techniques for brain functional studies, bringing together methodical and physiological aspects, and (ii) at discussing the combined use of optical techniques with complementary methods such as magnetic resonance imaging or electroencephalography. The workshop will consist of 16 invited talks, a small number of contributed talks and a poster session which will be open during the 3 days of the workshop. We particularly encourage contributions from PhD students and postdoctoral researchers working in biomedical optics, physics and related fields.
