The Institute of Applied Physics at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena practices in fundamental and applied research in the fields of micro and nano optics, fiber and waveguide optics, ultrafast optics, quantum optics as well as optical engineering. The research group "nano & quantum optics" is harnessing advanced nanostructuring technology, nonlinear optics, and quantum optics to investigate fundamental optical phenomena as well as to develop novel devices and applications.

PostDoc in Quantum Imaging and Sensing (m/f)

The strong correlations and entanglement present in quantum states of light, e.g. photon pairs generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion, allow for novel sensing, spectroscopy, and imaging modalities. These can operate at lower intensities, with better signal-to-noise-ratio, and in extended spectral ranges compared to traditional approaches. The task of the scientist is the development and optimization of such quantum sensing and imaging schemes, e.g. by implementing and testing dedicated photon state sources, specific measurement geometries, or improved data processing. Furthermore, the application prospects of the optimized methods shall be evaluated in realistic sensing scenarios.


  • Excellent PhD in physics, photonics or a related subject
  • Advanced knowledge in quantum optics
  • Knowledge in imaging physics or computational imaging
  • Knowledge in nonlinear optics
  • Knowledge in simulation techniques for integrated optics or optics design
  • Excellent skills in English (written and spoken), basic knowledge in German is appreciated
  • Ability to work independently as a researcher and effectively in a team

The position is initially limited to 3 years, extensions may by possible. The pay scale follows the wage agreements for public employees of federal German states (TV-L13, 100%). Severely disabled applicants with equal qualification and aptitude are given preferential consideration.
